| Thursday, September 11, 2008 Palin-palooza MATT N., BORDERS Kaylene Johnson's biography of Sarah Palin, Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned Alaska's Political Establishment Upside Down, has certainly been in demand. The book's initial print run when it was released in April was 7,000 copies; yesterday Tyndale House began shipping a run of 250,000. (And it's also now available as an eBook.) Building on that interest is Joe Hilley's just-announced Sarah Palin: A New Kind of Leader (available October 10). According to the publisher, the book "will explore themes from her career in politics, her life as a hockey mom, and her strongly held Christian faith." ![]() Excerpt from Sarah by Kaylene Johnson ![]() PRE-ORDER Sarah Palin: A New Kind of Leader Wednesday, September 10, 2008 House Work MATT N., BORDERS Need a break from the war of words on the campaign trail? Conceived and co-created by the National Children's Book and Literacy Alliance, Our White House: Looking in, Looking Out is a collection of essays, personal accounts, historical fiction, and poetry melded with an equally stunning array of original art to offer a multifaceted look at America's history through the prism of the White House. Change We Can Believe In includes a new foreword by Obama and presents his arguments for "how to fix our ailing economy and strengthen the middle class, make health care affordable for all, achieve energy independence, and keep America safe in a dangerous world." Those looking for more on Obama's views on the faith, American values, and our country's current political process can turn to his 2006 book The Audacity of Hope, which builds on themes raised in his keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. (Or if you just want a recommendation for a good read, check out his Guest Shortlist below.) ![]() Excerpt from The Audacity of Hope ![]() Barack's Shortlist 5 Picks to Read, Watch & Listen To Thursday, September 4, 2008 McCain Takes Center Stage MATT N., BORDERS Tonight John McCain accepts his party's nomination to run for president. Much has been made of McCain's status as a GOP "maverick," and he's written two engaging memoirs on the forces that have shaped him as a person and a politician: Faith of My Fathers chronicles his upbringing through his harrowing ordeal in a Hanoi POW camp, while Worth the Fighting For picks up where that book left off to chronicle his career in Washington and ultimate quest for the Oval Office. ![]() Excerpt from Faith of My Fathers ![]() Excerpt from Worth the Fighting For Wednesday, September 3, 2008 She Hunts Moose... and Donkeys MATT N., BORDERS It's a pretty safe bet that none of the rampant speculation leading up to the conventions about the possibility of a woman running mate included references to Sarah Palin. Yet tonight the youngest governor in Alaska's history is set to electrify the Republican National Convention as the presumptive vice-presidential nominee. For anyone who found themselves wondering, "Where'd she come from?" Kaylene Johnson's reverent bio Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned Alaska's Political Establishment Upside Down provides insight on a woman many perceive to be the fresh face of the party's future. ![]() Excerpt from Sarah Friday, August 29, 2008 Biden Bio Out in Paperback MATT N., BORDERS After Joe Biden was picked as Barack Obama's running mate, interest in Biden's 2007 memoir certainly outstripped supply. But a new paperback edition of Promises to Keep is now available. The book offers reflections on both Biden's personal life and his nearly four decades as a U.S. senator from Delaware. ![]() Excerpt from Promises to Keep Thursday, August 28, 2008 Living the Dream MATT N., BORDERS ![]() Anyone who heard Georgia Rep. John Lewis's interview on NPR's Morning Edition today got a sense for the emotional heft and historical significance of Barack Obama accepting the Democratic presidential nomination, especially on the anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. Lewis stood with King on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963, a day credited with mobilizing supporters of desegregation and prompting the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The next year, King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. You can read the full speech here. ![]() Wednesday, August 27, 2008 On Terror & the War MATT N., BORDERS ![]() Wednesday night sees a focus on national security at the Democratic National Convention, and a couple of recent books have been making headlines (and waves) for their arguments that America has forfeited the moral high ground in the War on Terror. The Way of the World by Ron Suskind addresses Suskind's take on our actions in relation to a terrorist nuclear threat, while Jane Mayer's The Dark Side relates what she sees as the devastating impact of the U.S.'s treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. ![]() Interview with Ron Suskind ![]() Audio Excerpt from The Dark Side Wednesday, August 27, 2008 Victory in Iraq MATT N., BORDERS With The Strongest Tribe, combat reporter and former assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs under Ronald Reagan Bing West argues that America is still poised for victory in Iraq despite mistakes at the highest levels. Apropos of Suskind and Mayer's critiques, West contends that a different kind of war requires a different kind of combat. "Our future enemies won't wear uniforms," says West. "Our judges say they deserve Constitutional rights. Our soldiers are put in the role of policemen. But you cannot fight wars if every enemy in civilian clothes has to be read his Miranda rights." ![]() Excerpt from The Strongest Tribe Monday, August 25, 2008 Political Hype Goes Mile High MATT N., BORDERS With the Democratic National Convention upon us, the 2008 election season is officially in full swing. While the convention itself is largely an exercise in formality, Michael Moore's just-released book, Mike's Election Guide 2008, is more apt to ruffle some feathers. Possibly the nation's most recognized (and divisive) lefty, Moore offers a liberal dose of criticism in his assessment of the current campaign. ![]() Excerpt from Mike's Election Guide 2008 Monday, August 25, 2008 In the Name of the Fathers MATT N., BORDERS ![]() Another aspect in which the 2008 election is remarkable is that both John McCain and Barack Obama boast refreshingly insightful, engrossing memoirseach dealing with the legacies of their fathers. For McCain, that meant the inescapable presence of a naval legend; for Obama, it meant filling the void of a father he knew more as a myth than as a man. ![]() Excerpt from Faith of My Fathers by John McCain ![]() Excerpt from Dreams from My Father by Barack Obama Monday, August 25, 2008 Borders Exclusive Between the Lines MATT N., BORDERS As rhetoric ignites in this historic election year, Newsweek senior editor and NBC News analyst Jonathan Alter offers a fascinating, balanced look at both our past and our future. The Obama Nation, an anti-Obama book written by Jerome V. Corsi (Unfit for Command), made its debut at No. 1 on the New York Times hardcover nonfiction bestseller list
causing the Obama camp to issue an adamant rebuttal. And Obama's own books, Dreams from My Father and The Audacity of Hope, have been huge bestsellers.
